- Had a little trouble following the story from the past to the present. The jumps seem sudden. Other than that, skilled writing and intriguing story about two women fighting for a dead man's estate. Kept me interested and wondering why there hadn't been many reviews.

- I was hesitant to read this book. If a book is written well--fiction or nonfiction, I always leave with new ideas, often being transformed in my thinking. I wasn't sure I wanted to allow any sleeping dogs in my life to stay asleep and couldn't understand why anyone else would. Tiffani Quarles-Sanders did an excellent job of enlightening me, of changing my mind. The book is well written. The characters pull the reader into the story and bring out so many different emotions. And, yes, I am enlightened. I must be honest. I am one of those who could never understand why an African American woman would willingly get involved with a white male because of the experiences of our ancestors. Reading this book caused a new thought to come to mind. Sometimes when we are free, we are not totally free. I was angry by Big Jim's treatment of Willie Taylor and definitely could not understand why his mother would continue a relationship with him. But, the author's use of the term "strong armed" when referencing how Jim (nothing big about him but his size probably) handled the situation after Willie's death caused another light bulb moment for me. People do what they do for reasons that even they don't always understand. Even with Willie's death and him not being able to marry the love of his life and raise his baby girl, I loved how Tiffani wove the story and had his cousin (another thing I wouldn't normally go for) to step in and be that god-father, later daddy to his baby girl. Love does conquer all, when we allow it to. Because of his love and devotion to Willie, James Taylor could be nothing but an ideal daddy, the very best he knew how. I salute Tiffani Quarles-Sanders for a job well done.
