• Peter Lovesey's crime novels usually gently involve a murder or two. The word "gently" is meant to imply that the crimes occur off-stage, as it were, and do not involve the reader in gory descriptions. Nevertheless, the ending is a jaw-dropping surprise for the reader.
  Lovesey's short stories contain all the wit and humor of his novels, and sometimes more, and, of course the surprise ending is reached much more quickly.
  Once you've read all the Inspector Peter Diamond novels--or, preferably even before--try his collections of short stories. You won't be disappointed.
